On 8 July 1947, the Roswell Army Air Field issued a press release announcing it had recovered a flying disc.

The following day it issued another one saying it was a weather balloon. That's the entire story, and everything since has been argument about which press release to believe.

Decades later the Air Force explained it had actually been a classified high-altitude surveillance balloon designed to detect Soviet nuclear tests. Which is a genuinely interesting secret, and somehow nobody found it as satisfying.

This is a vintage travel-poster rendering of the crash site — the disc half-buried in New Mexico scrub, the desert going on behind it. Pressed metal, weathered edges, the sort of thing that looks like it's been screwed to a wall since 1958.

Why it's a good object

  • Real metal, not printed board — it has weight to it
  • Distressed finish, so it looks found rather than bought
  • No power, no cable, no batteries. Hang it and forget it
  • Pre-drilled corners
  • Ships flat and arrives intact — unlike anything glass or ceramic
