About

There is a specific kind of person this shop is for.

You don't necessarily believe. That's not the requirement. The requirement is that you find the whole thing genuinely interesting — the declassified reports with the paragraphs blacked out, the pilots who won't retract, the eleven hours nobody can account for, the fact that a functioning modern state can look at a video and say unidentified and simply leave it there.

You've read enough to know that most of it has a boring explanation. Weather balloon. Lens flare. Venus, which is apparently responsible for a startling proportion of history.

And swamp gas. Always swamp gas.

In 1966, after dozens of people in Michigan reported glowing objects over a marsh, the official explanation was marsh gas igniting spontaneously. Nobody believed it. The phrase has been shorthand ever since for the answer that arrives too quickly and explains too little.

We named the shop after it.

What we actually do

Swampgas sells lamps, projectors, figurines and specimens for people who like the aesthetic of the unexplained: the classic grey, the saucer over a treeline, the column of light in a field at four in the morning, the thing at the edge of the woods that walks upright.

We take the design seriously and the mythology lightly. Everything is written up as though it came out of a filing cabinet nobody was supposed to open. None of it did. It came from a warehouse, and it arrives in a box, and it plugs into USB.

Three things we won't do

We won't sell you licensed knock-offs. This corner of the internet is thick with unlicensed film and TV merchandise, most of it made without permission and sold until somebody notices. We don't stock it. Everything here is a generic grey, a generic saucer, or a cryptid that has been in the public domain since long before anyone thought to trademark it.

We won't lie about delivery. Most of our stock ships direct from our fulfilment partners, and most of the time that takes three to five weeks. It says so on every product page, in the delivery policy, and in your confirmation email. We'd rather lose the sale than have you feel misled a fortnight from now.

We won't dress it up as something it isn't. These are decorative objects, made in a factory, shipped in a box. The stories are for fun. The lamp is real, the packaging is not classified, and nothing in this shop has ever been near a desert.

Who's behind it

Rorie — I run Swampgas from Belfast. I went down this rabbit hole about five years ago, somewhere around two in the morning, and never entirely climbed out. The shop is what happened next.
