Turn the light off and the ceiling turns on.

Stars, moons, planets and a few astronauts, cut from self-adhesive vinyl that soaks up daylight and gives it back after dark. You arrange them yourself, so the constellation is whatever you decide it is — accurate, or entirely invented.

Best on a ceiling above a bed, which is the obvious place and also the correct one.

How the glow works

They charge from light and discharge in the dark. Give them 2–3 hours in daylight or under a lamp before the first night — straight out of the packet they'll barely glow at all, and people assume they're faulty when they simply haven't been charged. After that, a normally-lit room tops them up on its own.

The glow is a soft green, brightest for the first hour or so after lights-out, then fading gently through the night. It is atmospheric, not a night light — you won't read by it.

Putting them up

• Peel and stick — no nails, no putty, no tools
• Repositionable while you work out the layout
• Designed to come off cleanly — but as with any adhesive, test one in a corner first if your paint is fresh or delicate
• Mixed shapes and sizes in each set, so you can build depth rather than a flat grid
